Unix Administrator

Our client a leader in the Finance and Banking Industry is looking to recruit an experienced Unix Systems Administrator to join their team. On offer is a rewarding permanent career role with a DYNAMIC organisation.

The Unix System Administrator is responsible for ensuring the operational stability and high availability of the client's midrange infrastructure, primarily made up of AIX on a Power series platform, but also other midrange environments including (but not restricted to) Linux and Solaris.

The role supports the clients business units by providing technical and operational support, expertise and consultancy on midrange related matters that impact the business in both a proactive and reactive manner with a particular focus on midrange support and project delivery including, estimation, detailed designs, technical configuration and implementations.
You will also ensure that a robust environment platform is provided by performing support duties daily procedural tasks, system management, change & project implementation.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Ensuring all midrange related problems/incidents are being actively worked on and resolved
Proactively contribute to operational improvements to the clients midrange and related infrastructure by identifying and communicating ideas / issues at regular meetings
Provision and/or input into midrange related technical designs and configuration standards
Ensuring hardware/software applications are operational across the midrange environment
Install & implement midrange applications into production as directed
Creating and maintaining user accounts
Monitoring, tuning and performing trend analysis of the System performance and capacity
Producing and acting on security violation reports
Installing and supporting systems software and system configuration

Essential
Extensive knowledge of one or more flavours of UNIX, typically focusing on AIX
Unix scripting skills
Hands on UNIX support and systems management experience
Experience in the design, deployment and on-going administration of all aspects of Unix environments
Strong trouble shooting and problem solving skills
Strong focus on customer satisfaction, high initiative levels, team player
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
Thorough knowledge of security policies and procedures
Required to work flexible hours and participate in an on-call roster to support banking operations

Desirable
Experience in implementing and/or troubleshooting of Linux environments
Experience in AIX virtualisation (VIO's)
Tertiary qualification in Computer Science or similar

The preference is for AIX skills. However the client will evaluate engineers who have had over 5 years experience with other UNIX flavours working in a large enterprise environment
